2,1 billion
Population growth in the last 2500 years by Melanie van Dijk

What are you looking at? It’s us! And our population growth in the last 2500 years. Each square represents 100 years. It goes from 150 million people in 300 BC to an estimated 11,2 billion in the year 2100.

In the last 200 years, everything has changed. In just a fraction of the time that our species has clocked on this planet, there are now 7,5 billions of us are of which 90% is rich, well nourished, clean, safe, smart, healthy and occasionally even beautiful. In comparison, in 1820 94% of the world population of 1 billion lived in extreme poverty. One last fact. If the time from which Homo Sapiens first emerged would be a year, the last 200 years are just one day.
